COLLECT FOR THE DAY

God, who - as at this time - taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit:
grant us - by the same Spirit - to have a right judgement in all things and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort;
through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Morning Mass:

FIRST READING (morning Mass)
Acts 2.1-21

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.
And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them.
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem.
And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in their native language.
Amazed and astonished, they asked, 'Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language?
Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs - in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power.'
All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, 'What does this mean?'
But others sneered and said, 'They are filled with new wine.'
But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, 'Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say.
Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning.
No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: "In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.
Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy.
And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist.
The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day.
Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved."'

PSALM
Psalm 104.25-35, 37

RR Send forth your Spirit, O Lord, and renew the face of the earth.

25 O Lord, how manifold are your works! in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. RR
26 Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, creatures both small and great.
27 There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, which you have made for the sport of it. RR
28 All of them look to you to give them their food in due season.
29 You give it to them, they gather it; you open your hand and they are filled with good things.
30 You hide your face and they are terrified; you take away their breath and they die and return to their dust. RR
31 You send forth your Spirit and they are created; and so you renew the face of the earth.
32 May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; may the Lord rejoice in all his works.
33 He looks at the earth and it trembles; he touches the mountains and they smoke. RR
34 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will praise my God while I have my being.
35 May these words of mine please him; I will rejoice in the Lord.
37 Bless the Lord, O my soul, Alleluia! RR

SECOND READING (morning Mass)
Romans 8.14-17

A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans.
All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption.
When we cry, 'Abba! Father!' it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ - if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

GOSPEL
John 14.8-17, (25-27)

Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.
Philip said to Jesus, 'Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.'
Jesus said to him, 'Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, "Show us the Father"? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works.
Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.
I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.
If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you for ever.
This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.
I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.
I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.'

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

Faithful God, who fulfilled the promises of Easter by sending us your Holy Spirit and opening to every race and nation the way of life eternal:
open our lips by your Spirit, that every tongue may tell of your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Evensong:

Psalm 36.5-10; 150

5 Thy mercy O Lord reacheth unto the heavens : and thy faithfulness unto the clouds
6 Thy righteousness standeth like the strong mountains : thy judgements are like a great deep
7 Thou Lord shalt save both man and beast, How excellent is thy mercy O God : and the children of men shall put their trust under the shadow of thy wings
8 They shall be satisfied with the plenteousness of thy house : and thou shalt give them drink of thy pleasures as out of the river.
9 For with thee is the well of life : and in thy light shall we see light.
10 O continue forth thy loving-kindness unto them that know thee : and thy righteousness unto them that are true of heart.

Exodus: 33.7-20 (RSV)

7* ¶ Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp; and he called it the tent of meeting. And every one who sought the LORD would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp.
8 Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people rose up, and every man stood at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he had gone into the tent.
9* When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the door of the tent, and the LORD would speak with Moses.
10 And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the door of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, every man at his tent door.
11* Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tent.
12* ¶ Moses said to the LORD, "See, thou sayest to me, 'Bring up this people'; but thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, 'I know you by name, and you have also found favour in my sight.'
13* Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thy sight, show me now thy ways, that I may know thee and find favour in thy sight. Consider too that this nation is thy people."
14* And he said, "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest."
15* And he said to him, "If thy presence will not go with me, do not carry us up from here.
16* For how shall it be known that I have found favour in thy sight, I and thy people? Is it not in thy going with us, so that we are distinct, I and thy people, from all other people that are upon the face of the earth?"
17* And the LORD said to Moses, "This very thing that you have spoken I will do; for you have found favour in my sight, and I know you by name."
18* Moses said, "I pray thee, show me thy glory."
19* And he said, "I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim before you my name 'The LORD'; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.
20* But," he said, "you cannot see my face; for man shall not see me and live."

2 Corinthians 3.4-18 (RSV)

4* Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God.
5* Not that we are competent of ourselves to claim anything as coming from us; our competence is from God,
6* ¶ who has made us competent to be ministers of a new covenant, not in a written code but in the Spirit; for the written code kills, but the Spirit gives life.
7* Now if the dispensation of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such splendour that the Israelites could not look at Moses' face because of its brightness, fading as this was,
8* will not the dispensation of the Spirit be attended with greater splendour?
9* For if there was splendour in the dispensation of condemnation, the dispensation of righteousness must far exceed it in splendour.
10* Indeed, in this case, what once had splendour has come to have no splendour at all, because of the splendour that surpasses it.
11* For if what faded away came with splendour, what is permanent must have much more splendour.
12* ¶ Since we have such a hope, we are very bold,
13* not like Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not see the end of the fading splendour.
14* But their minds were hardened; for to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away.
15 Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their minds;
16* but when a man turns to the Lord the veil is removed.
17* Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
18* And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being changed into his likeness from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

Reuben's Theme: "The Holy Spirit in the world today"
+
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

This sunday, as we all know, is Whit Sunday...
...the Day of Pentecost.
What is the Day of Pentecost?
Pentecost is a Jewish festival, which falls exactly 50 days after the Passover.
Pentecost is the Jewish "festival of firstfruits", which took place at the beginning of the first harvest every year.

As we heard in this morning's Gospel, the Apostles were all together in one place, rather lost, very frightened and a little despondent to say the least.
It was not only 50 days after the Passover...
...it was 50 days after the death of Jesus.
Jesus had risen from the dead and appeared to them several times.
But Jesus had now ascended to heaven...
...and they thought they were on their own...
...and they didn't feel very much like spreading any 'Good News' to anyone.
And the thought of preaching Christianity in Jerusalem...
...to the devout Jews...
You would feel you need to be either very well protected, or just exceptionally stupid to go round preaching the Christian Gospel in Israel...
...in Jerusalem...
...spilling over with devout Jews from all over the known world...
...On Pentecost...

But as we know
- Jesus never deserts us.
Jesus protected them...
...because Jesus is God...
...and God sent the Holy Spirit.

As Jesus told the Apostles in this morning's Gospel:
"But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.
I do not give to you as the world gives.
Do not let your hearts be troubled...
...and do not let them be afraid."

They had faith...
...they had knowledge...
...and now they had the power of the Holy Spirit.
They could speak about the Gospel and be understood.
Spiritual deafness had gone.
Whatever religious tradition anyone came from, they understood the Gospel of Christ
- when interpreted by the Apostles...
...and by Peter...
On that day of Pentecost, Peter
- an ordinary person, just like you or me - preached the first Christian sermon - because that day, the first day of Pentecost - after the death and resurrection of our Lord and Saviour, Christianity was born...
...and the Holy Spirit was with Peter.

As Paul said in our second reading this morning, "All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God."
If I'd been one of the disciples, on the day that Peter stood up and harangued the crowd
- preaching the Christian Gospel...
I would have been very nervous...
I would frightened that the crowd would turn on us.
"Peter! ...keep it down! ...you're going to get us into trouble!"
But if you find yourself in trouble
- when preaching the Gospel of Christ - Paul tells us:
"When we cry, 'Abba! Father!'
it is that very Spirit...
bearing witness with our spirit...
that we are children of God...
and if children...
then heirs...
heirs of God...
and joint heirs with Christ...
if, in fact, we suffer with Him...
so that we may also be glorified with Him."

As it said in this morning's psalm,
"Send forth your Spirit, O Lord, and renew the face of the earth."
And on that special day of Pentecost, the Lord did just that.
The day of Pentecost...
...the Jewish festival of firstfruits...
...which took place at the beginning of the first harvest each year.

In our first reading this evening, we heard from the of the book of Exodus.
God will not go back on his promise, but Israel has forfeited his promise, and without that
- the promised land is nothing...
...Again Moses pleads for the people at a time of crisis...
And the LORD said to Moses, "This very thing that you have spoken I will do; for you have found favour in my sight, and I know you by name."
God's answer encourages him to press a personal plea for a revelation of God in all his splendour.
Just like Philip, in this morning's Gospel, when he said to Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied."
But Jesus tells him
- "Whoever has seen me has seen the Father." and "Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you - I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works."
So Moses' personal plea for a revelation of God in all his splendour, is answered by God's reply:
"I will make all my goodness pass before you...
and will proclaim before you my name 'The LORD'...
and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious...
and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy...
But,"
he said, "you cannot see my face...
for man shall not see me and live."

So, when Moses asked the Lord for help in guiding his people, all God gave was encouragement, because that is all the people of Israel needed at that time.
The great hope of Salvation, for Israel and all the nations, the coming of the Messiah
- the day that God would become a human being - in Christ Jesus , was a long way off...
As Paul says, in our second reading tonight, "Since we have such a hope, we are very bold, not like Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not see the end of the fading splendour."

And the ultimate gift from God was only to come after the 'Death and Resurrection' of Jesus Christ
- everyone's Lord and Saviour...
...and the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost
- the Jewish festival of firstfruits, which took place at the beginning of the first harvest every year.
Paul's words still count to this very day, when he wrote:
"But their minds were hardened; for to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away.
Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds; but when a man turns to the Lord the veil is removed."

As the people of Israel closed their eyes to the message of the old covenant, they bring down a veil
- a barrier - between God and themselves.
To remove that barrier, they must turn to Christ.

Israel had a promise with God...
...a basic Jewish Law...
...a promise that was inconvenient...
...a promise that they failed to keep..
...a Law of Moses
- that they have broken.
Moses wrote, that after travelling through the wilderness, and on reaching the 'Promised Land", it was to belong to the Jewish nation for them to possess and settle in.
But...
Always at the first harvest, Pentecost, some of the produce must be taken to the house of the Lord...
...temple or synagogue...
...the place of worship where the ark is kept...
...and God is perceived to dwell.
After presenting the offering, the law continues...
You shall set it down before the LORD your God and bow down before the LORD your God. Then you, together with the Levites and the aliens who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that the LORD your God has given to you and to your house.

This is what God's people must do to preserve their right to the 'Promised Land'
- on the day of Pentecost...
...the Jewish festival of firstfruits...
...which takes place at the beginning of the first harvest every year.

So, we are nearing the end of this special day...
...This festival of firstfruits...
...This day of sharing...
...The day Christianity was born...
...The Christian Church's birthday!..
...The day of Pentecost...
...Yet another day when the nation of Israel continues to turn from God and oppresses the people native to the Holy Land...
...robbing them of their land...
...their freedom...
...and in many cases, their lives.
No sharing of the first harvest for the Palestinians today...
...Israel has forfeited God's promise...
...and without that
- the Promised Land is nothing!
As good and true Jewish people, throughout the world are looking on in horror at what is happpening in Jerusalem...
...We need another Moses to plead to the Lord on behalf of the people of Israel at this time of crisis today.
All the people of God must turn to the one true God...
...the LORD God
- our Father in Heaven...
...the Son
- our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ...
...and the Holy Spirit
- our only hope for the future of the world.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem
- by the healing power of Jesus Christ.
As we follow, in the way of Jesus Christ, people will recognise who we are
- by the way we love one another.
Our love for all the people of Israel, Palestine, Iraq, Colombia and, indeed, all the people of the world, must shine out like a beacon!
To the glory of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ!

We must pray for Mordechai Vanunu, and all Christians suffering at the hands of the Nation of Israel.
We must pray for the nation of Israel, that they may turn to God once more.
We must pray for all who are suffering, in any way, weather we agree with their politics or not.
We must pray for the unity of all the peoples of all the nations...
...a unity which can only be gained
- through Jesus Christ...
...Our Lord and Saviour...
...The Messiah...
...Our only hope in times of trouble.

We must pray like we have never prayed before!
As we sang this morning, "Send forth your Spirit, O Lord, and renew the face of the earth."
The day must come when Holy Spirit moves through the Holy Land and spreads throughout the world...
...in all earthly things... ...as it is in heaven...
Thy Kingdom come, O Lord... ...Thy will be done.

As we prayed in Fan the Flame week...
...and continue to pray today...
"Heavenly Father, Send your Holy Spirit to stir our hearts and minds; That we may blaze forth with love for you, and for each other in this place, now and for ever. Amen.
By our love for one another, others will recognise us, and turn to Christ... ...and believe me
- it will spread...
...one day it will spread throughout Jerusalem...
...and all the world.
I leave you with a prayer for this week...
...and all times of uncertainty...
Come Holy Spirit and kindle within us the fire of your love.
Our plea to God.
Come Holy Spirit and kindle within us the fire of your love.
Our only hope for the future of all the world!
Come Holy Spirit and kindle within us the fire of your love.

+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
